IC CHARACTERISTICS

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Edward Teach stands about 6 feet, with an impressive and curly beard (more grey now than black), and long hair that he often wears partly tied back. He wears an outfit that is more or less identical to Mad Max, a one sleeved leather jacket, fingerless gloves, rings, etc. His exposed (right) arm shows off just some of his many tattoos, including a large snake that runs down said arm to his hand. He wears a knee brace on his left knee.
DEMEANOR:
Generally quite a confident demeanor. Ed's not afraid to take up space.
His love language is touch, and he is very free with the shoulder claps.
When possible he keeps weight off of his left leg, and inclined to stretch it out when sitting, though he is still able to walk/run/bend/jump etc. if/when he needs.
He has a New Zealand accent, and somewhat anachronistic way of talking at times. Interview about this choice, as well as some costuming decisions.
ABILITIES:
Blackbeard inspires both his own crew and that of the Revenge with ease, leading, guiding and teaching. It's clear he used a much firmer hand with his own crew than Bonnet's, but it is a cruelty they seemed almost happy to accept to have the honor of sailing under Blackbeard.
Edward has been a sailor for a large part of his life, and before he had his own ship/crew to Captain he served under Captain Hornigold, who reported treated them like dogs, likely inspiring much of his own treatment of his crew. While he hasn't had to put some of these skills to use in a while as Captain, he knows the ins and outs of operating and maintaining a ship, navigating, and pillaging/looting.
Blackbeard doesn't merely rely on brute force or violence. He shows he is actually quite clever when the occasion calls for it, and he delights in showing off his plans. Sometimes this is demonstrated via 'the art of fuckery', whereby they play into the stories of Blackbeard's intrigue and use drama, fear and impressive special effects to scare their targets.
He constructed another plan to slip by a Spanish fleet unseen, correctly predicting the fog, but forgetting to calculate the leap year, he was off by one day, and thus wrong about the strength of the tide. That his plan was calculated down to the day however shows the level of thought he puts into things.
He and Stede then formulate and enact a plan to pretend the ship is a lighthouse, very quickly constructing a fairly impressive set up that succeeds in fooling the Spanish.
Other skills are not quite so clever by modern standards, but have worked well for him- such as always taking a blade in the left side, because science teaches us all the important organs are on the right.
He knows when to fight, and when to surrender to live another day.
Ed is skilled with a sword/dueling. He passes on some of his knowledge to Stede, a playful and patient teacher.
(Not really seen fired on screen, but he does carry a flick lock pistol.)
Ed is able to deduce an approaching fog down to almost the second, based off of an observation of some frankfurter shaped clouds in the distance.
Ed can swim, at least for short distances.
Though he claims not to be very musical, he can play some melodies (mostly shanties).
*A note: Historically it is speculated that Edward Teach could read, but as Our Flag Means Death has deviated from history quite a bit, as well as firmly established this version of Edward to come from a very poor background, in addition to signing his contract with an X while Stede signs his full name, I will be interpreting this as him not being able to read/write.
